Quest for new, affordable art
Now THIS was a truly inspiring art show. Held at St. David's Trinity Center over the weekend of November 6-7, the Art from the Streets show is an exhibition and sale of the works by Austin's homeless community. I bought several pieces that are now up on my walls and they stand toe-to-toe with pieces by celebrated artists.
(Surf Painting by John Curran)It was awesome to see and talk to the artists themselves. We don't usually get the opportunity to talk to each other in our society, not to discuss our lives and inspirations in such a positive way, but these guys proudly wore the badge of "Artist" and were happy to share their tales. Apart from a small mounting fee (around $3) the rest of the proceeds went straight to the artists and the art ran from $35 to several hunderd dollars. I know my mum went home to England proudly clutching her Dennis Williams piece, and I have my Pat Bailey in my office for inspiration.
